Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; * 26 November 1939 † 24 May 2023) was an American singer and actress whose career spanned more than 50 years. She won numerous awards, and her achievements in the rock music genre led many to call her the "Queen of Rock'n'Roll." Turner began her music career with her husband, Ike Turner, as a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Success followed with a series of hits, including "River Deep, Mountain High" and the 1971 hit "Proud Mary."
With the publication of her autobiography I, Tina (1986), Turner revealed severe instances of spousal abuse by Ike Turner before their separation in 1976 and eventual divorce in 1978. After virtually disappearing from the music scene for several years following her divorce from Ike Turner, she rebuilt her career, launching a series of hits beginning in 1983 with the single "Let's Stay Together" and the 1984 release of her fifth solo album, Private Dancer.
In her darkest times, Tina, a deeply spiritual woman raised as a Baptist, sought solace by reciting “The Lord’s Prayer” and, later, a mystical Buddhist chant to connect to a higher power beyond her human understanding. She began chanting “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” repeatedly. “I found something changed inside of me; the load of pressure in my life started to lift. I started to become happy, and then, slowly, the thoughts came to me of what to do to change my life.”
Her music career led to film roles, beginning with a prominent role as The Acid Queen in the 1975 film Tommy and an appearance in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. She starred alongside Mel Gibson as Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, for which she received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, and her version of the film’s theme, "We Don’t Need Another Hero," became a hit single. She also appeared in the 1993 film Last Action Hero.
One of the world's most popular entertainers, Turner was called the most successful female rock artist and was named "one of the greatest singers of all time" by Rolling Stone. Her combined album and single sales total approximately 180 million copies worldwide. She sold more concert tickets than any other solo music performer in history. She was known for her energetic stage presence, powerful vocals, career longevity, and broad appeal.
In 2008, Turner came out of semi-retirement to embark on her “Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour.” Turner's tour became one of the highest-selling ticketed shows of 2008–2009. Rolling Stone ranked her at 63 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time and considered her the "Queen of Rock and Roll."
Tina Turner believed deeply in spiritual growth and, in 2009, joined creative forces with two renowned musicians based in Switzerland, one of Christian background (Regula Curti) and the other a Tibetan Buddhist (Dechen Shak-Dagsay), to go beyond culture, tradition, and self to reach “beyond the beyond,” as Sufi poet Rumi wrote, meeting in a field of pure potentiality. The result was a remarkable album titled BEYOND: Buddhist and Christian Prayers.
In 2011, Children BEYOND followed, featuring 30 children from different cultures and nations singing prayers and mantras with Tina Turner, Regula Curti, and Dechen Shak-Dagsay. Children BEYOND is the soundtrack from the Planting Seeds of Mindfulness movie, based on the bestselling book Planting Seeds of Mindfulness by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village Community.
In 2014, the third album Love Within BEYOND was released, featuring Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu prayers by Tina Turner, Regula Curti, Dechen Shak-Dagsay, and Sawani Shende Sathaye.
The fourth album, AWAKENING BEYOND, was launched in November 2017 with lyrics and prayers from six different cultures and spiritual traditions worldwide, featuring Tina Turner, Regula Curti, Ani Choying, Dima Orsho, Sawani Shende Sathaye, and Mor Karbasi. See more at www.beyondsinging.com.
